Hulme Lock, waiting for restoration
The outline of Hulme Lock is clearly visible. We’re looking northwards, that’s uphill, yet the land level beyond the lock is lower than the lock. Subsidence from coal mining has changed ground levels around here and that may be the cause. Removal of embankments as flood channels have been diverted elsewhere may mean we are looking at the bottom of the channel without any sidewalls making it look like it has sunk.
