Looking upstream along the River Foss in York, towards the large structure for the Flood Barrier. The barrier is closed during floods to stop the high water levels on the River Ouse passing upstream on the River Foss and flooding York that way. The water flowing down the River Foss is pumped over the flood barrier when it’s closed.

We are about to pass through the structure for the flood barrier on the River Foss in York on our Waterway Routes narrowboat. The flood barrier is normally open, and closed during floods.
