Galton Tunnel would not be recognised by the old canal builders as it’s a modern addition. Arched concrete segments were placed over the canal before being covered by earth to form the base for a modern road scheme.
The tunnel hides what would have been a wonderful view of Galton Bridge which suddenly appears high above the canal as boats emerge from the far end of the tunnel.
Galton Tunnels: The 600 ft long tunnel and the parallel Brindley can tunnel a;sp 600 ft. It was built with in-situ concrete by Higgs and Hill Ltd
The parabolic steel shutters were tracked.. The canal is 72 ft below the highway. The fill was coal tip waste

Concrete segments were NOT used. Your error description. Do you know of the 1927 ground collapse ans rail line collapse to?
The Telford Bridge was the longest span with minimum rise 1827 similar to M2 Medway Bridge 1962, ratio
Brindley also built the Rye Harbour near where I live now
Thank you for your comment. I have checked several sources, including measuring the length from Google Maps, and all these confirm the tunnel length as 103 yards, that’s 309 feet (or very close to that) which is the Canal & River Trust’s measurement and certainly nowhere near the 600 feet you mention.
