Wendover Arm

Wendover ArmThe Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal runs from Bulbourne Junction to Wendover Basin.
It is 10.8km (6.7 miles) long with no locks.
The first 2.3km (1.4 miles) is open for navigation, with the rest of the arm under restoration.
|
HistoryThe summit level of the Grand Union Canal passes Bulbourne Junction and, like any canal summit level, required a constant supply of water to replenish that lost through leakage, evaporation and the use of locks.
The Wendover Arm was constructed to bring water from the plentiful supplies at Wendover and was made navigable for a small additional cost. Construction started in 1793 and it was opened in 1797.
Unfortunately, despite considerable efforts, the arm continually leaked water and lost more water than it brought to the summit level, with water often seen flowing backwards along the feeder. Blocking the arm at Little Tring resulted in an immediate improvement in the water supply and the Arm was closed in 1904. |
RestorationThe Wendover Arm Trust was formed in 1989 and has many achievements since then, including:-
> Consultation for the new A41 bypass resulting in agreement for a bridge with navigable headroom over the Wendover Arm
> Survey with British Waterways to confirm the leakage problems which led to the closure of the Wendover Arm could be solved with modern construction techniques
> Campaigning successfully for the restoration of Rothschild Bridge 8A rather than demolition as the aged structure became unsafe
> Opening in 1997, exactly 200 years after the arm first opened, of the first 400m (440 yards) section of restored canal
> Construction of the new brick clad concrete Little Tring Bridge 3 to replace the embankment which was blocking the route
