Aylesbury Arm

The Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal runs from Marsworth Junction to Aylesbury Basin.

It is 9.9km (6.2 miles) long with 16 narrow locks.

The Route

The summit level of the Grand Union Canal passes Marsworth Junction where the Aylesbury Arm leaves the main line and descends into Aylesbury

It's a narrow canal, unlike the broad main line it leaves behind. The first two locks form a staircase with locks 3 to 9 following in quick succession. The remaining locks, 10 to 16 are spaced out along the arm. Using the locks drains water from the main line which ends up at the end of the arm and flows into the River Thame and, eventually into the River Thames.

There are wonderful views across the countryside from several locations along the Arm and the towpath features in several recommended walking routes - although it is exceptionally muddy in winter and after heavy rain.
