We are close to the mouth of Lapal Tunnel which would have been much lower than current ground level so the canal can pass under the road ahead. Just to the right of the bus shelter is an old stone wall which some people suggest is the parapet of the former tunnel portal. I don’t believe that is the case, as the canal would be passing under the road much lower in a tunnel rather than at a shallow level, and my interpretation of old Ordnance Survey Maps puts the tunnel mouth much nearer the camera.
The proposed new alignment will take the canal off the right hand edge of this photo where it will pass under the road.
