Beale Park stand

«

»

I travelled home on the train yesterday afternoon and packed the car with all the material for our stand during the evening.

This morning saw a trouble free drive to Beale Park and we were unloading our boxes by 10 o’clock and stacking them in the marquee.

Most of our setting up was done by lunchtime when we retired to our boat for a quick sandwich and a coffee.

2

We finished the stand this afternoon and watched everyone else working on theirs.

If you are coming to the IWA National Festival then please come and say hello to us. We are at stand A2 in the Premier Marquee, just inside the left hand entrance doors.

Our Waterway Routes narrowboat is moored outside on berth N2B, that’s just to the north of the entrance if you miss us during the day.

Beale Park setup

«

»

We’ve made it to Beale Park for the IWA 2010 National Festival. With the strong winds that have been blowing and the recent heavy rain it is good to see all the marquees nearly finished and the site progressing well.

Boaters are starting to gather and the official mooring spaces come into effect from tomorrow when there will be a shuffling of boats to get everyone into their correct place. Come and see us at berth N2B if you get a chance. - that’s just north of the entrance to the lake and the second boat out from the bank.

I have a little shuffling to do with a return home by train to collect the car with the exhibition stand and boxes of DVDs, ready to set this up during Friday.

Look our for our stand, A2, in the Premier Marquee. next to the left hand entrance door.

Please say hello, and introduce yourselves – we’re looking forward to meeting you.

OverWater Marina stand at the Crick Boat Show

«

»

The stand next to ours at the Crick Boat Show was for OverWater Marina at Audlem on the Shropshire Union Canal.

It was staffed throughout by Alex and Anthony who spent three days talking to potential moorers about the new marina and handing out leaflets.

Their aim, successfully achieved I’m sure, was to raise awareness of the marina in a way which will lead to bookings over the coming months.

2

admired their confidence to keep talking all day and trust the bookings followed later. It’s not like our stand where we get positive feedback with direct sales at the time.

They also carried leaflets for Audlem Mill who were so busy with the Audlem Music and Arts Festival they were unable to attend.

We had a great weekend meeting lots of new and existing customers, selling lots of DVDs and handing out lots of leaflets. Thank you to everybody who came to our stand.

Crick Boat Show

«

»

We had another good day at the Crick Boat show today. We met lots of customers, and received great feedback from those who had already purchased DVDs from us previously.

We also met Adam and Adrian from Debdale and we met Halfie who was kind enough to introduce himself, or we might not have recognised him.

We’re looking forward to meeting even more people tomorrow, before packing up and travelling home for a late finish. Please say hello to us if you’re coming to the show.

Crowds at the Crick Boat Show

«

»

Today was the first of the three days at the Crick Boat Show. We were very surprised to see how quickly the crowds built up in the morning, making it busier than the afternoon. It seems the rain didn’t put many people off coming.

Here’s a view of the crowds taken from our stand. The gentleman in the light coloured jacked, just left of centre, is Andrew Denny from Granny Buttons. Any suggestions as to what he might be saying.

We are ready at the Crick Boat Show

«

»

We packed the car and set off after breakfast for the Crick Boat Show to set up our stand. We were able to park the car right outside the marquee to unload then move it to the exhibitors car park afterwards.

With a short break for a sandwich at lunch time we were almost finished by early afternoon with time to take these photos and look around to see what else was happening as the stands around us in the marquee.

2

There wasn’t much to see, although there was lots going on outside when everyone was pleased to see the fine weather. I hope that continues throughout the weekend to bring the visitors in.

If you are coming to Crick then please introduce yourselves. It’s nice to meet our mail order customers or blog readers face to face – but please remember to introduce yourselves – you may know us through reading the blog but we have no idea who you are - but we’d like to find out.

We’ll have our full range of DVDs on sale, including our new Warwickshire Ring DVD, with the first copy of that sold to an exhibitor already today.

«

»

Our Warwickshire Ring DVDs are ready and we’ll have them on sale at Crick.

They are available in our usual Popular (£12.95), Bowcam (£7.95) and Combined (£19.90) formats.

The DVD follows a cruise clockwise around the ring from Braunston Turn, including visits to the Saltisford Arm and to Coventry.

They will be available mail order as soon as I get a quiet moment to add them to our website.

In the meantime we look forward to meeting our customers and friends at the Crick Boat show over the Bank Holiday weekend. Come and see us in the Kingfisher Marquee, stand KF127.

Moira Canal Festival

«

»

Saturday felt like the hottest day of the year, and almost too hot to venture out, but it was the weekend for the 10th annual Moira Canal Festival, an opportunity too good to be missed.

Lots of people thought the same too.

Moira is at the northern end of the Ashby Canal on the restored section which is still disconnected from the main canal network. One day it will be reconnected with a new link.

There were lots of activities for visitors during the day including the first person to walk across the Ashby Canal on a tightrope.

We saw the Ashby Canal Association stand and bought an excellent guide from them.

I hope we get good weather for the Crick boat show next weekend where we have a stand for the first time. Please come and say hello if you see us there.

We’re going to Crick

«

»

One week from now we’ll be on our way to the Crick Boat Show and Waterways Festival, to use it’s full title. The show is held over the Bank Holiday weekend and the Friday is setting up day when we get everything ready.

This is the first time we’ve been to Crick and we’re looking forward to being there. Our stand will be much larger than the one we had at the IWA Festival last year, and shown in this photo.

The show is open on the Sat/Sun/Mon of the Bank Holiday Weekend (29/30/31 May). If you are coming to the festival then please come and say hello and introduce yourself. It will be nice to meet our blog readers and mail order customers in person.

Stourbridge Canal Festival 2009

Another trip on the train today took me to the Stourbridge Canal Festival held at the Bonded Warehouse, and along the canal side.

There were lots of people there and it was starting to get crowded as I left.

I spotted the Birmingham Canal Navigations Society (BCNS) stand proudly selling the Waterways Routes range of DVDs.  I hope they do well.

IWA Festival 2008 – Autherley Junction

«

»

August Bank Holiday means it’s the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) festival.  It’s held at a different location every year and this year it’s at Autherley Junction where the Shropshire Union Canal and the Staffs & Worcester Canal meet near Wolverhampton.

We had planned to visit on Saturday morning but our plans became a little complicated and Christine visited on Saturday morning and I visited on Sunday morning.  It was a very quiet start to Sunday morning but it was just starting to fill up as I left at lunchtime.

ALTALTALT   © Paul Balmer 2008 ALTALTALT   © Paul Balmer 2008

There were all sorts of stands, typical of these festivals.  Some sheltered in the marquees and others braving the weather with their stalls outside.  Plenty of boats to go aboard, if you don’t mind queuing.  There was, of course, plenty of the traditional mud to wade through.  There were plenty of volunteers putting down cartloads of bark chippings but they were soon trodden into the mud.

Then it was back by bus and train to our boat, still moored in Birmingham.

We’d planned to cruise the Avon Ring this week but unfortunately our daughter, Susan, is in Hospital.  First in City Hospital, and now in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, fortunately both within reach from our home moorings so we’re living on the boat.  We’re still not certain what the problem is but it seems to be a rare infection which has stopped her kidneys working and she has needed dialysis.

There are small signs of improvement now and we might manage a short cruise later in the week, hopping between railway stations or bus stops so we can still see her during visiting hours.  With our son Andrew, and girlfriend Megan aboard we can share the visiting.
